Apr 11, 2015 - 1953 – 1959: VINs contained this same information, with digits. It was also the first time Chevrolet used a number instead of a letter to identify.

1970 VIN Breakdown

Do not confuse the Vehicle Identification Number plate information with that found on the Fisher Body Number plate (trim tag). The series depiction on the VIN plate does NOT have the meaning as the Fisher Body Number plate.

The Vehicle Identification Number plate (VIN) has similar information to the trim tag such as the model, year, and assembly plant. One difference is the last six numbers relating to the assembly plant sequence as opposed to the trim tag's Fisher Body sequence and the series will designate a 6-cyl (odd 3rd digit) or V8 (even 3rd digit) on the VIN plate where the 3rd digit on the trim tag does not.

A typical 1970 Chevelle VIN might read: 136370A135979 being a Malibu V8 2-door sport coupe assembled in Atlanta, GA. and is the 35,979th 1970 model year Chevelle sequenced at the Atlanta, GA. assembly plant.

The VIN plate is located on the forward part of the dash so the VIN plate could easily been seen through the windshield of the car. The VIN plate was riveted to a special bracket with unique 'rosette' rivets.

Eighth through Thirteenth Characters: Sequential Production Number
The sequential starting number for the 1970 Chevelle was 100001 at most Chevelle assembly plants with Arlington and Oshawa being the exceptions. Arlington started Chevelle numbering at 200001, and Oshawa, Ontario started Chevelle numbering at 500001. Each assembly plant sequenced Chevelles of all series/models without regard to specific series/models. For example, if a series 13435 station wagon followed a 13667 Malibu convertible, the sequence number would be one unit higher for the wagon. It's also entirely possible to have the same sequence number from four 1970 U.S. assembly plants (Atlanta, Baltimore, Flint, and Kansas City) with the only difference between the VINs being the plant code. This would only apply to Arlington sequence numbers from 200001 through 222339 since Arlington sequence numbers began with 200001 and Baltimore's last reported sequence being 207939 and Kansas City's last reported sequence being 222339.

It should be noted that the Monte Carlo and Chevelle were built on the same assembly lines at Baltimore, Flint, and Los Angeles (Van Nuys) and sequencing numbers would be the same range. This means that if the Monte Carlo shown with the inspector was sequence number 123456, the Chevelle next in line would be sequence number 123457.

Production at the Baltimore assembly plant in early June, the Kansas City plant exceeded 100,000 units sometime in early May, and the Van Nuys plant exceeded 100,000 units sometime in mid to late June so the VIN sequence from those time frames to the end of production would be 2nnnnn for the Baltimore, Kansas City, and Van Nuys plants and those last sequence numbers could also match some from Arlington since their sequence numbers started with 200001.

* The El Camino is not a separate series nameplate but rather a body style in both the base Standard (33/34) and Malibu (35/36) series although it's often listed as such. The base (33/34) El Camino is a 2-dr sedan pickup body style with standard trim where the (35/36) El Camino Custom is a 2-dr sedan pickup body style with Malibu trim.

These photos are of 1970 Chevelles, the location is the same for 1968 through 1972 VIN plates; 1965 through 1972 VIN plates used special rivets. Note the two different styles of riveting done.

Instant Vehicle History Report

Avoid buying a car with costly hidden problems.

Since 1954, all vehicles made in the United States are assigned a vehicle identification number (VIN). In the first few decades of VIN assignment, the numbers themselves varied depending on the vehicle's manufacturer—there was no standard regarding length, character type, etc.

Gm Vin Number Breakdown

Beginning with the production of vehicles model year 1981 and newer, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standardized the assignment of VINs to be a combination of 17 characters (numbers and letters).

Importance of VINs for Older Vehicles

Whether it's for pure nostalgia or business purposes, there are many reasons you may need tolocate the VIN of an older vehicle. Some of the more common include:

  • Searching for an old car or truck you used to own.
  • Checking the authenticity of an older vehicle before you decide to purchase it.
  • Getting the exact history for an old car you already own.
  • Obtaining production numbers for rare or special edition vehicles.
  • Determining an accurate value for a vehicle before you decide to sell.

Like any used car, it's important to know as much about a vehicle's history as possible. Because older cars and trucks typically have a larger monetary value, the risk is often greater—especially if you don't have any way of knowing basic information of a car or truck's history.

Find a VIN for an Older Vehicle

Your first step to locating an older vehicle or obtaining more information about a particular vehicle's history is to obtain an accurate VIN or serial number. If the VIN plates and stickers are missing, or if you don't know the VIN of an old car or truck you used to own, there are several ways you can locate a particular vehicle's VIN, such as:

  • Old registration and insurance cards.
  • Any loan papers you may have signed.
    • The bank from which the loan was obtained may also have this information on file.
  • Records from insurance companies.
    • Either your insurance company or a previous owner's.
  • Repair records from a car dealership.
    • Repair receipts are also a possibility.
  • Police reportsor insurance claims.
    • VIN information might be available if the vehicle was ever involved in an accident.

Using Photos to Find VIN Information

If you aren't able to locate a vehicle's VIN through these methods, you might want to try searching through old photographs. While some of this information may not directly lead to a VIN number, it can provide valuable information on the history of a vehicle.

It's a good idea to search old photographs for:

  • License plate numbers.
    • If you own the vehicle, the state DMV where the car or truck is registered may be able to help you locate the VIN in some cases.
  • Information relating to original body, engine, and transmission type.
  • The original color of vehicle.
  • Information relating to the interior design of the vehicle.

  • Using a VIN check site that specializes in older vehicle databases.
  • Typing your VIN into a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or Bing.

If you don't have a VIN or serial number, try posting a search history on the vehicle. A search history is an ad that typically features a short description or story related to the vehicle you're searching for. Post a search history you create to:

  • Enthusiast message boards.
  • National car club websites.
  • Use any car club that features your model of vehicle.
  • Facebook or other social media outlets.
  • Want ads in car club newsletters.
  • A blog you create.

In addition to posting a search history, locating previous owners of the vehicle can provide valuable information that can help you find your car. If you have the address or name of the person your car was sold to, get in contact by searching:

  • Social media.
  • Public record databases.
  • Gathering information through search engines.

This can often lead to more detailed information on license plates, VIN numbers, and additional owners of the vehicle that may help you to continue your search.
